La Belle Duchess - a Beautiful Mystery !
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 00:42 BST (UK) »

I was sent some wonderful photos today and wondered if anybody has any good ideas of how we can find out about "our La Belle Duchess" .... here's the story .............

Quote
These four photographs represent the sum total of knowledge about this young lady. When I was very young my gran said there was some one who worked with "Buffalo Bill".  John Turner from the Circus Friends Association has been unable to help me identify her. There is no family story to help nor any clue as to her real name. There is a possibility that she is a HANDS originally from around Redditch, Worcestershire. However, my guess is that she is a HUMPHRIES. This means that the family left Meifod in Montgomeryshire, Wales in about the 1840s and went to Bilston, Staffordshire. By the 1881 census they were in Manchester. Over the next 2 or 3 years some brothers went to Texas, U.S.A. One returned, I think to Manchester. Another brother, ended up in the1930s around Lichfield in Staffordshire.

At one time .... Buffalo Bill did join up with a circus ... but I think they only toured in America !

These pictures don't look like the Wild West Show to me ... but I could be wrong !!  :-\

I've been going through loads of pictures at the Buffalo Bill Museum ... but haven't come up with anything yet ... would appreciate a push in the right direction !!  :D :D

Hi Annie!

Well, for starters, here's a bit from Wikipedia about the Wild West Show and the fact that it did, in fact, tour in Europe:

Quote
In 1887 he took the show to England in celebration of the Jubilee year of Queen Victoria. The show was staged in London before going on to Birmingham and then Salford near Manchester, where it stayed for five months. In 1889 the show toured Europe.

Apparently the show ran for 10 years from 1883, so the end date would be 1893 if that's correct.

I don't think these photos relate to the Wild West Show - they have more of a circus/stage act appearance.  For a date, I'd say around 1900 to 1910 at the latest, at least for those last two.  The others are a bit more difficult but probably around the same time.

Hope that helps get things started!

Prue (and Harry  :-*  )

Hi Prue and Harry !!  ;)

If I found a 29 year old in 1881 .... would she fit the photo ? 'cos I found this young lady .... but ........  ::) what the heck I'll post anyways - you never know !!  :) Time frame is good for Buffalo Bill .... he went into the 1900's ..... but I was wondering more about her clothes Prue and her age in the photos !!

Fabulous pictures Annie. She looks very young I think - particularly in that second picture.

So Prue, do you think that the Buffalo Bill show would have used local 'stars' in their overseas performances? Would this be seen as a risque occupation for a young woman at that time?  ;)

Annie, is this girl definitely an ancestor of the person who sent them to you?

Just considering the possibility that she may just be an ancestor's pin-up girl, with no family connection. You know what it's like, you have a few photos of someone you fancy, photos end up in a drawer under some old papers, then one day after you're dead, someone digs them out and wonders who they're related to - They put two and two together, and get five ....  ;D

Perhaps some investigation of the family would be the best starting point - try to trace the family of the person who gave you the photos, to see if this girl fits in anywhere? I know that the surname Hands is from the W.Midlands - I have some in my tree. Humphries is a bit more widespread (I have some of them too, but spelled differently  :))

Just some vague thoughts .....

Ohh I see you have just posted Annie - that looks an interesting census find. I think the girl looks more like 19 than 29 though, but perhaps Sarah Crockett didn't know her age, or she may have lied about her age when she ran off to join the circus .... ;D

... that'll teach me to read other posts more carefully  :-[

The Amelia I found Ruskie - would have married into the Humphreys ... and you're right about photos ...... my Granddad carried a picture of an East Indian lady around in his wallet for years apparently !!  ::) ::) ( though who knows the story behind that !! )

Just as an aside my uncle ran away to join the circus .... the Incredible Eddie !! ( though his name was Henry but everybody called him Ben !! ... that was a dance trying to sort him out !! )  :D

Just had another look at the pictures - in the second photo the girl looks a lot younger and less buxom - even looks a little different in profile than the last photo. Photographs taken at different times perhaps. Or is that all fabric enhancements in the last picture  ;).

Um, perhaps she may be older than I originally thought ....

That census is a good fit though - but Prue has estimated 1900 to 1910 for the photos ...

Well, that IS interesting about your Grandad and the photo he kept! I'll bet you've spent many hours pondering on that!
