Please find birth of Sarah COCKRAM
« on: Wednesday 25 June 08 13:47 BST (UK) »
My gt gt grandmother Sarah Cockram was born in Stockleigh Pomeroy (according to 1861 census--she married and lived in Berks.). I'm trying to find which Sarah Cockram she was. According to 1841 only one SC was born in Stockleigh Pomeroy and she is too old at 35. However, IGI says she that SC was christened in 1824. Her parents James and Charity were married in 1811. All her siblings appear much younger. Is it possible the 1841 census is wrong and she was really 15? Orig. document definitely says 35. Could someone find her birth date for me?

Can you clarify - do you mean 1841 - as that census does not give place of birth.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex

... nor relationships.

Maybe she was sister, and their daughter Sarah was in service somewhere.

Oh and ... Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Here is the 1841 that is referred to:

Stockleigh Pomeroy

James Cockrum 55 farmer
Charity  55
Sarah 35
William 20 shoemaker
Mary 12
Elizabeth 20
John 10                all bn in cy

by the erratic listing of the ages, I would guess that they are not all children of James n Charity

Here is Willam in 1851, still in SP
HO107 1807 296 17

William Ridge Cockram 33 shoemaker, parish clerk and school master bn SP
Sarah wife 41
Ch. Ann 7 bn SP
Thomas Wood servant, boot and shoe journeyman

William was a man of many talents wasnt he? I bet Ch. Ann is really Charity!

there are other Cockrums in SP in 1851 - bear with me and I will type them up. May be red herrings or may help piece the family together.

If yuo are interested that is....

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Dont know, Newfster, though I think it must be known as askwendy refers to 1861 census.

I am just amusing myself hunting around for this family in general.

The other Cockram's still in SP in 1851 are not particularly helpful, though I am sure are all related in somehow. It seems a close knit community. here they are:

Higher Westwood, SP

Robert Yendall farmer 43 acres empl 1 pab
John Westcott serv Farm lab
Thos Hosgood house servant
Richard Cockram cousin 56 mar carpenter and miller
Mary Cockram sister Mar 45 dressmaker bn SP
James Cockram nephew 11 bn SP

more Yendalls next door if they prove to be related.

This looks like a possible for Sarah in 1851:

HO107 1887 93 38

h/H of john Heugill, Wesleyan minister and wife and small children in Crediton
Sarah Cockram 23 house servant bn Crediton
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I think I have a better 1851 match at St Marylebone, Liz  :)

HO107/1491 127 4

(she's age 26)

The IGI christening is a perfect match so I think we'll just have to admit that the other Sarah is someone else - sister or siter in law or whatever  :)
