I would like to know if anyone could help me I,m looking for any info on My grandfathers family.  My grandfather was called George Leach he married my Nan Mary Ellen Craven October 1919.  My g.granddad was called James Leach and my g.grandmother was called Margaret Walker they married November 1895 at St Marks church  in Woodhouse Leeds.  James father was also called James, whom at the time of marriage is deceased and Margaret's father was called John Walker.  I Know that my g.grandmother was supposed to have had a shop in Woodhouse (shay street) which is backed up with the information on my grandfathers (George )marriage certificate it states that James was a greengrocer at this point. Any info to help me further would be greatfully appreciated. thankyou

Hi Babsjane,

Are you trying to trace them back?

Is this your family in 1901 for a start?

1901
RG13/4233 21 7
Leeds, Yorkshire
19 Holborn (something)
4 rooms occupied

James Leach, head, 25, Bricklayer's labourer
Margaret, wife, 22
George, son, 5
Francis, son, 3
John Wm, son, 1

All born Leeds.

What were James' and Margaret's father's occupations according to the marriage cert, and who were the witnesses?  :)

Hi Tati

yes this looks like them as I know that my granddad had some siblings called JohnWilliam and frank ( which would be short for Francis).

On my g.grandparents marriage certificate it states that James(was a cartman) dad was James ( deceased)  was a labourer.  Margaret father john was also a labourer

babsjane :) P.s I'm am trying to trace them back

Well, I'm having trouble identifying James on earlier census! There are several candidates but none with a father James  :-\

This could be Margaret:

1891
RG12/3701 74 12
Leeds, Yorkshire
(Ecclesiastical parish: St Mark's)
9 Bloomfield Mant?
4 rooms occupied

John Walker, head, 49, Moulder's labourer, b. Scotland Glasgow
Esther, wife, 48, b. Lancashire Manchester
Elizabeth, dau, 16, Machinist, b. Leeds
Margaret, dau, 13, Tailoress, b. do.
Ellen, dau, 10, scholar, b. do.
Harry, son, 7, scholar, b. do.
Esther, dau, 5, scholar, b. do.

For the record, the above family (= widowed Esther with daughters Ellen and Esther) live just a few households away from James and Margaret in 1901.

Well, this is getting complicated! Please forgive me if this is a red herring!  :P

The one family who seems to match the above Walker family in 1881 is called Mathieson!  ???

The 1871 again has a Walker family that strangely looks like the 1881 Mathiesons ... (if we accept that Francis' age should be 14 months instead of 14 years)
RG10/5101 46 10
All Saints, Northumberland
14 Paindon? Bank

Francis? Walker, head, 34, Hawker, b. Ireland
Esther, wife, 28, Hawker, b. Manchester
Francis, son, 14, b. Bradford
Jane, (no relationship shown), b. Durham Sunderland

Hi Tati

okaayy  1891 info looks like a good bet   but then I get confused  are you saying (may or may not) that in 1871  the walker family - Francis is john ? or that esther the mum is with somebody else.  I've had allsorts with my family history so far so this is quite funny our relies like to keep us on our toes !lol ;D

It's a bit odd isn't it? Let's wait if someone can find a more credible family, maybe  :P

Hello,I. Am also researching James Leach for my Niece Her Mother was Diane Leach her Father Alec Georges brother. I also traced back to 1901,traced Margaret further back a mystery as to why they changed their name from Mathieson to Walker as they are the same family. I keep thinking I have found her Great Great Grandfather James but find they are still living in 1901 when I come forward which is no good as they are supposed to be deceased. Have you had any further luck? One I thought was on the 1871 census James leach born 1842 had married Eliza Sutcliffe 1869,I think it is his death  1899 but I do not see a son James in the 1881 Census :-[

Just bumping this up the list for you

The Original poster has not been on since 2013.

I’ve been looking but nothing obvious is leaping out.
James Leach may have invented his father, but even taking him out of the equation it is difficult.

I did get a bit excited about James son of William and (I have forgotten wife’s name for the moment)  who had a brother John William which as James had a son John William seemed promising.  However not only was William’s name different, so was his occupation, so I don’t think it’s a case of the vicar making an error.

You will have considered this, but just thinking aloud....

Alternate spelling LEECH of course, but I also saw one family where LEACH had been transcribed as LEAK, so will have to consider LEEK as well.
Also SEE/ACH
