Fairmans and Martins from Newington
« on: Saturday 22 January 05 16:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Wonder if anyone out there can help,

I am trying to find Alfred Fairman, his son was Alfred who married a Caroline Day in January 1887.

I feel confused regarding the first Alfred Fairman, although I have the marriage certificate of his marriage to Sophia Martin in 1853, I am beginning to have my doubts that I am on the right track.

The first Alfred was born abt 1833/5 and his father was John Fairman a labourer and lived in Pitt Street.

Sophia lived at Church Row and her father was Robert William Martin a tanner.

Any help would be wonderful thanks

DO you have the family on any census?
When was Alfred jnr born? and what job did he/they do?

Is this Alfred senior (widowed) in 1881?
There is a gap between sons and I wondered if Alf junior would be in the middle  ;D

Hello Carol

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

I did find Alfred and a brother James on the 1891 census, they married two
sisters Caroline and Isabelle Day.

I think you may well be right about Alfred being widowed, I have recently found him on the 1901 census aged 66, wife Ann 43, step-son James Coker
daughter Sarah age 5 living in Lower Bland Street.

I did find a death of a Sophia Martin died Sept 1873, could it be that I am on the right track after all.

I have recently obtained the 1871 census for Southwark and St Saviour, I'm sure it has also got St Georges the Martyr on it as well, I think I am going to do some trawling of that census.

If you do find anything else I would be grateful

Many thanks

Yvonne

You jammy ole thing Yvonne  ;D to get father in law on the 1901 census too!

James Coker 11  Southwark, London, England Stepson  Newington
Alfred Fairman 66  Southwark, London, England Head  Newington  coopers labourer
Ann Fairman 43  Blackfield, London, England Wife  Newington
Sarah Fairman 5  Southwark, London, England Daughter  Newington
Jeffery Bateman 68  Cork, Ireland Father-in-law  Newington

So the 1881 is defintely correct as the names, dates and jobs tie up.

AND IN 1891  at 71 Kinglake Street, St Mary Newington
RG12/358 Folio 71  Page32

Alfred Fairman 55 widower head Cooper born St Georges London
Richard Fairman 15 son  born St Georges London.

Haven't found him in 1871 must be mistranscribed,so will check later for you.

Hope this helps to confirm you are on the right track  ;D

Yvonne

You enter the persons name and voila! You then have to guess what else it could be transcribed under.

I have plenty of practice with my gt grandma's lot -RAPKIN.
Hardly ever written properly,it's been Rapile,Rabjohns,Ropkins and Rapkins of course.

Glad to have been of assistance- see you were on the right track ;D
Just that old Alf seemed to have remarried every time one wife died  ::)
