Where was Jane Wilson born?
« on: Saturday 28 June 08 14:40 BST (UK) »
Jane Wilson nee Bill d/o John Bill and Elizabeth Meeson was born Linley Brook (1851 census) Shropshire May 21 1808 baptised St Mary Stafford on 7th June 1808.

She is incorrectly entered in the 1871 census RG 10/ 176/ f 31/ p 59 as Jane WILTON, not Wilson, wife of Joseph. born at Mon/t?/?/nor r? Shropshire. can anyone read it ,or guess, or even know where it is?

What might John have been doing in Linley Brook in May 1808 which would allow him to take so young a child to Stafford for baptism in June? I looked at Linley Brook and there isn't much there now!

Just a guess, without looking at the entry, could it be a compressed version of the district, Montgomery/ Radnor/ Shropshire? Wrong part of the county though, I think.
Linley is NW of Bridgnorth, there's a beautiful little church there, St Leonard's. Linley Brook is just down the hill. There is another Linley near Bishop's Castle and both have a Linley Hall!

Here is the place of birth - I can't think of a place in Shropshire like that at the moment apart from Moreton  :-\

Thank you. Do you know where Moreton is? Is it anywhere near Bridgnorth/ Madeley? Linley Brook where she said in 1851 that she was born is between the two.

Moreton Say or Moreton Corbet  -

But Norton is half way between Bridgenorth and Madeley. I wonder if it's that:

Pity the census enumerator was totally illiterate. I think I fancy Norton - it's the village with the Hundred House, isn't it?
Thanks again.

Could it be a badly written MORVILLE - that's not far from Linley Brook.

Not sure that I'd read Morville from that, Jan. More like Norton - maybe it was the Shropshire accent - Norrrrrrrrrt'n  ;D

I might be muddying the waters a bit here but I felt I should mention Monkhopton (maybe the ennumerator thought she said Monkton), there were a few villages around there such as Monkhall, that are just farmhouses now so are off the map. The Mor Brook runs through this area once covered by the Shirlett Forest and many places it runs through, like Morville are named after it, so the place you're looking for maybe in this area but so tiny it's now swallowed up by a larger village or forgotten.
By the way, yes the Hundred House is in Norton, as is a whipping post and stocks!
