*COMPLETED* Colmworth Marriage - White / Knight 1730
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 01:51 BST (UK) »
**COMPLETED**Looking for any details of the marriage of Philip White and Sarah Knight which took place in the Parish of Colmworth on 22 June 1730. In particular I am looking for parentage, birthplace, previous residence, and witnesses to the marriage.

Thanks,
DavidD

Hi David

Welcome to Rootschat

Pre 1754 you are lucky to get anything more than the two names to a marriage. From 1754 the parish of residence at the time of the marriage and the names of the witnesses were added. Fathers' names were added from 1837, but mothers' names, birthplace, and previous residence have never been recorded, not even today.

The only additional details on the Colmworth marriage are the words "by certificate from Roxon". I assume this to be Roxton, but I can't tell if it relates to Philip, or Sarah, or both

Hello David,  & welcome to RootsChat

Could this be the Philip & Sarah who had children baptised at Bletsoe ?
Sarah 26/07/1730
John   08/02/1732

plus there is a burial of Philip (son of P & S) on 19/07/1734 but I've not found the baptsim

As I've not yet found another Philip & Sarah marriage that would fit.

Regards John

I agree that this could be the marriage of the Philip White and Sarah who appear in Bletsoe about the same period.  I also have found no other marriages that fit the date.

Thanks Bedfordshire Boy for the information about what to expect to find in the marriage registers.  Can you or anyone tell me what the phrase "by certificate from Roxton" means?   Does that mean that the bannhs were read there as well?

Thanks,
DavidD

I think the "By certificate" referred to the certicate provided by the vicar of Roxton confirming that he had called the banns for the marriage. Which party resided in Roxton I can't tell, but as the phrase in the transcript was typed underneath Sarah it may have been her.
