CREAN/BRADLEY
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 02:25 BST (UK) »
I have a Patrick BRADLEY married to Julia CREAN 1840-50's in Co Kerry. Two of their daughters or maybe their only ones, Catherine b c1853 and Mary b c 1859, emigrated to New Zealand to settle in Wellington.
Catherine married Michael McKeow(e)n. Mary I am still tracking.
Their immigration record to NZ states county of origin as Kerry, so the birth place and marriage place are assumptions from this. Rootschat doesn't register the surname Crean at all.
Does anyone have these names on their trees?
Thanks
Bryan

You are actually incredibly lucky as baptisms for three of Patrick and Julia's children are listed in IGI: Mary (1859), Nora (1861), Hannah (1867). By narrowing down the area you should be able to search for church records (if they still exist), etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I'm researching Crean/Cryan.

It's a very uncommon name and one associated mainly with Roscommon and surrounding areas. There are some Crean families in Sligo at roughly this date: perhaps a Crean ancestor migrated down the west coast.

There won't be many Creans in Kerry: if there are, chances are they're yours.

Be aware that the name has multiple possible spellings..Crean, Crehane, Cryan, Creen, Crane, Kirrane etc.

I'd be interested to hear the results of your search.
Ireland: Collins (Cork, Limerick); Corcoran (Cork); Mullen (Galway); Corless (Galway); Mulvey (Sligo); Cryan (Leitrim).
England: Clayton (Lancashire)

Thanks aghadowey. Did you notice I'd moved South from Down and Armagh?  :) Next lot are in Tyrone. So I'm getting a virtual tour of Ireland!
Ddigital1, thanks for the alternative spellings.  I'd only got as far as Creane.
I've so far extracted all Crean's and Bradley's off Griffiths for Kerry. I'll keep you posted.

There is a very famous Crean -Tom Crean of Annascaul Kerry who was on one of the early (1913) Antartic explorations. See website www.creancentre.com/tom_crean.html.

There are still descendants living in that area Lispole and Annascaul today.

Thankyou all for the further snippets of information. Tom Crean is an interesting one as I have another link to the Antarctic expeditions via another family.
