Exciting, not ot be missed opportunity!
« on: Wednesday 02 July 08 00:42 BST (UK) »
Hi!

Barbara is an absolute gem!!

She's told us about a

free trial on "The Gale".

There are quite a number of entries for Ireland including the Dublin area.

Thy one of the newspaper archives for a good start.
I've seen it elsewhere on Rootschat, but it's a huge database with entries in many newspapers, regional and national.  Mine were large regionals.  It also gives a full search with links to articles, and the search term is hi-lited on the scan.

I've just found thirty odd scans for two gggrandfathers of my own and one of my friends.  They my have been famous or infamous, but even just had announcements for marriages etc .

Time's limitted.  I couldn't just see how long or when.
Go to the link and give minimal info to register and you're straight in!

I got details for towns and cities in this country and Australia.

Good hunting!

Yup, it certainly looks promising - except that you need an institutional adress to register.  So, no use to private researchers.  Pity

Hi Maggott

I tried it a few months ago and simply put in an address and keft the area for "Institution" blank. Maybe they hope word of mouth will make people ask for it at libraries etc.
Bezant (London/Suffolk), West (London/Essex), Walker (Yorkshire), Phillips (West Country - believed Bristol area), Tibbetts (Warwickshire), Armstrong (Co Fermanagh), Harvison (Co Wexford), Neeb (Germany), Becker (Germany), Jakobsson (Finland). Kanneworff (Germany and Denmark)

Just put 'home' in for the institutional address.  It works!  (and everyone gets the same logon and passoword)  Forget what they are now,  password is 'books' I think.

ed:  I think it's 'virtual' and 'books'.

Thank you, everybody, for the advice (I give up too easily :))  I got into the site but couldn't find anything useful.  So must try again tomorrow.  So far lots of publishing info & booklists....
Thanks again

Hi
You do not need an institutional address - i put my surname in the namwe of institution field and the first line of my address in the address field and it works fine.

Hi

Glad you got in okay.

I've mainly used the various UK Newspapers and magazines. My Irish relatives mainly ended up nin the Salford and Manchester area of the UK, so those papers have come up, also lIVERPOOL.

I've also had quite a few entries from the Dublin and Belfast papers.  No certs yet, but there hardly ever are wioth my Hoeys, you just keep plugging at the clues!

Some 19C marriages I knew about and were possibilities, I now have more detail and a church for.

If you've got an ancestor who rellay distinguished himself in the courts you're in with a really good chance!!

If you have too many results, and you really just want BMD's, click the people button on the left to limit the list.

Good hunting!
