I found lots of useful information but the search criteria are key. For instance if you have ancestors in Dublin, Kildare or Wicklow key in the parish and the surname and you will find newspaper entries from 1890 to 1900 listing the donors for each parish to Pope Leo XIII's collection. This was published on 1st August for each of those years and it can help to pinpoint when your ancestor died for example.

I also used place names to good effect. Townlands are often too small so i went for the nearest larger town together with a surname and again found some useful information.

hi ,

another thing - if you want to search on a full name enclose it in quotes eg "James Murphy"

I don't know if there is a more up to date thread re the Gale Library Archives but I have a few questions.

I have tried to access this via my local Library Solihull, Warwickshire, but they appear to only have The Times Archive which is not what I am searching for.

Previously, I accessed the Birmingham Daily Post through a free trial a couple of years ago. It was extremely useful. Going to the "free trial" offered by Gale I couldn't find any reference to British Newspapers.

Can someone direct me to what I was able to access before please?

This is one of the threads about the Gale site- if you go to Search page, put in 'Gale' and have only Census and Resource Discussion board checked other mentions come up.

Hi

I don't know of any free trials for individuals, but we can get certain databases with our library cards.  Have you treid going to your library group (eg. county, not just the branch), and seeing if they have a link to online databases and seeing what's listed?  We can use some of ours at home but some just in the library.

Good luck!

Thanks to you both for your replies. I suppose I should have started a new thread with this question. Sorry.

I will try the link.

Also, I did speak to Solihull Library personally but they were very vague!!! Apparently I can access the Birmingham Daily Post Archives at Birmingham Central Library which isn't that far away. It was others on that site which I found interesting too. It was the 19th Century British Newspaper site that was the real gem. :)

Thanks once again.

I will see what happens and keep you informed.

Hi Judy

It looks as if it's not on the Birmingham list yet.

The local historical data looks good, but they say they only charge to cover costs and I couldn't tell if you still had to pay if you had a Birmingham Library card.

Best wishes

Thanks for your trouble.

I just don't know why they cannot subscribe to 19thC British Newspapers too. There are a lot of regional newspapers in this database especially of interest to us genealogists! ;D

Cheers
