A mystery in Corwen.
« on: Saturday 05 July 08 16:01 BST (UK) »
Hi
My family lived and worked at the Eagles Inn in 1841 (census)

Robert Jones (b.1813 Llanfawr, Merionydd), his wife Martha (Jones? b. 1811 Gwyddelwern, Merionetth).

They had at least 5 children Jane (1846), Margaret (1840), Winifred (1841), Ellenor (1844) and William (1849).

I can't seem to find anything about them after this time, although my Gt Gt grandmother, Jane did marry her husband William Evans in Corwen in 1870.

I'd love to find something from the 51, 61, and 71 censuses... help???

Hello Tracy

I'm interterested in your family because I have a very similar one with a Margaret Jones originating in Gwyddelwern in 1806 and marrying a Robert Jones b. Llanycil circa 1802 and some of the childrens' names are similar. I don't ecpect they're related but I sympathise  :-\

Do you have Jane's marriage ertificate and, if so, does it say if her father was deceased?

I'll have a look at the censuses in the meantime.

Hi Gadget.
So sorry, I meant the 51 census... not 41.
That is how I know that Jane lived there.... must of had a blonde moment! ::)

It's the time after this I can't quite find.

Thanks

Part of Corwen is missing in 1861, as are many places.I checked the main Town and could not find them.

What about the marriage cert?

Hi  Tracy

I checked out the trade directories for Corwen in the time period 1835 to 1856.

In 1835 the Inn listing for Eagles says John Jones
In 1840 the listing shows as Spread Eagle Robert Jones
In 1844 and 1850 the listing is Eagles, Robert Jones
by 1856 is listed John Jones

Hi Heather

Thanks for that! How strange! I wonder if Robert had a brother? I have no record of a John in the family? Is it the 'lodger'?

Just had a thought.... maybe John Jones was Martha or Robert's father?? - That is assuming the ages fit in and that in the 1851 census they rounded the ages up/down.
