Hi

This is a bit difficult as Whittington and Babbinswood are close together and Maesbury is a few miles south of Oswestry.

If you have him on the 1841 census and he is down as b. c. 1766, he could be born between 1762 and 1766 as those over 15 had ages rounded down  :-\

Unfortunately the IGI doesn't have all the Shropshire birth/baptisms.  What dates do you have for the children?

There does seem to be a baptism trail for them between Babbinswood/Whittington 1800-1802 and the Oswestry/maesbury births. Unfortunately, the marriages are both patron submissions and should be checked against parish records  :-\

I notice that James was b. Maesbury  :)

I added a wee bit on my earlier message - it could be that William and Ann moved from the Whittington area in the early 1800s and moved to Maesbury - it's not far at all and, as William was an Ag Lab, they could have moved for work.

If no one has come on with any more info, I'll check my local records for you tomorrow  :)

To add a little local flavour that might be relevant ~

The land agent for Chirk Castle was buying up small parcels of land/estates in the Whittington/Gobowen area around that time. It might be that William and Alice were caught up in this and had to move for work.

Also, a picture of Whittington Church:

Right - my line dropped as i was putting this up  :(

looked at the Whittington records:

Marriage 4 August 1798 William Wild and Alice Williams

Baptisms:

6 Jan 1799 - John s/o William and Alice Wild of Babbins Wood
26 Oct 1800 - William s/o William and Alice Wild of Babbins Wood
28 Nov 1802 - Margaret d/o William and Alice Wild of Babbins Wood

Can't find a baptism for William, snr. earlier than Nov 1774 s/o Joseph and Jane
