Help with surname please. COMPLETE. THANKS TO ALL
« on: Monday 07 July 08 15:52 BST (UK) »
Hello

I wonder if anybody can help with the following?

In the 1851 census SCT1851, ED7 folio 128 Page 13, Greens of Glack, Mortlach I have found mention of a JAMES SHAKLES, age 1 yr.

Looking in the IGI I find a birth of JAMES SCAKELS 19.5 1849, Mortlach which I have no doubt is the same.

I am fairly sure both of these transcriptions are wrong but my question is does anybody have any thoughts on the correct name?  Perhaps somebody with access to the original census entry might be able to decipher the name?

Many thanks.

Hallo Bob,

The IGI shows the various spellings as:
Scahill
Scails
Scales (the most numerous)
Scalles
Scheele
Schaile
Skahill
Skaile
Skails
Skaills
Skailles
Skales

Just to add a little more.  The 1861 Census of Botriphnie Parish (next to Mortlach) has a James Shakles aged 11, and the 1871 Census of the Parish of Glass, Aberdeenshire also has a James Shakles aged 21.

Hope this is of some help.

Isles.

Hi Bob,

Just by narrowing the search parameters on Scotlands People it seems to be listed exactly as in the IGI, but under his Christening date, rather than Birth. The spellings are exactly the same so it may be the original spelling of the registrar/minister/whoever that is at fault rather than the transcription.

SHACKLES or variations thereof are popular names in England, but not Scotland. It would depend on where his father was from, again maybe if someone can look up the original census record it would help give you more details.

From the 1851 census at SP (search results, I haven't viewed the orginal), the surnames is down as SHAKLES as suggested by Isles and Kirsty. Freecen also have the full household entry with young James at his grandparents (McLean) and the surname down as SHAKLES.

the Morayshire Heritage Centre has mention of 2 ppl with the name SHAKLES. They can be found at http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp

The eldest is a Margaret b.1840 with father James - under ref No. NM168029
The other is a John Archibald b. 1908 d. 1910 - under ref No. NM167948.

Both these entries have additional newspaper information, and MHC are very good at answering queries - if, at times a bit slow because of the volume, there only being two staff. All the details on how to contact them are on the site

Thank you everybody who has tried to help, it looks like Shakles is the correct name, especially the fact that James seems to appear in the 1861 and 1871 censuses with that name.

I think the Libindex entry is relating to Margaret the wife of James Shakles who I think could be the James that I am intereted in.

Looks like another problem solved through the kindness of everyone at Rootschat.

Thanks again to you all.

Following on from my last post I have just found that James Shakles did indeed marry Margaret Nichol in Mortlach, 12.12 1874 so that agrees with the libindex line of thought.

I know at least three living people in Morayshire/Banffshire/Aberdeenshire whose surname is Skakles, so don't overlook this version.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
