 :D :D :D :D :D :D
so presumably this means that Richard the cotton operative moonlighted as Bert the comedian!

Bert is not the most obvious stage name to choose is it? Maybe it was one of those strange family things where you get called a completely different name to your 'real' one.
Does Richard fit with your grandfathers family?

Richard Howarth that ain't no Bert!

Still can't make the connection. My grandfather said over the weekend that Jack Howarth was as far as he was aware his fathers cousin, which is what i have been assuming all along. Just can't make the link between John Howarth and Richard Howarth because surely they would have to be brothers for my grandfathers dad Fred to have been cousins with Jack.

Or is there a less likely but still possible more obscure link that could make them cousins?

1881 has no John Howarth's living with a Richard as a sibling. Richard of course could be older and already have left home by 1881.
Can anyone find any John and Richard Howarth brothers on the 1871 census?

Plus i really need to order that marriage certifcate for Richard and Amelia to see what that can throw up, not least Richard's age.

Sorry i took so long to repley, have been going mad not been able to get on internet.

Thanks

Jonathan

Found this family living at 'Flash' (three households) in the village of Healy, Spotland:

James Howarth, 47, carter
Betty Howarth, 38
JOHN, son age 19, coal miner
Alice, dau, 17, woollen weaver
Moses, son, 13, coal miner  :'(
RICHARD, son, 8
James, son, 4
Mary Jane, dau, 1

But you do need the marriage cert really to eliminate some of the guess work.  Next census page page after this one, there are more Howarths, also coal miners; with more Richards and more Johns!

Ok folks - Update

I now have the marriage certificate for Richard Howarth and Amelia Townsend:

August 20th 1894 at the Parish Church in Rochdale

Richard 23 years old - Bachelor - Twister - 82 Mil?stone Road

Amelia 20 years old - Spinster - Weaver - 96 Mitchell Street

Richard's father is John Howarth who is a book-keeper
Amelia's father is James Edward Townsend who is an Accountant

Says the marraige was given after Banns

and the four witnesses where Alfred Ashworth, a name i can't make out, Janet Howarth and Minnie Townsend

First impressions for me are that Jack Howarth (Albert Tatlock) could come into all this not because his father and John Howarth (bn.1865 - not Richard's father) are brothers but maybe because Richards father John the Book-keeper and John Howarth's (Bn 1865.) father whoever he is are the brothers.

On account of in 1889 John listing only Deceased in where the fathers name should go and in 1894 Richard listing John Howarth.

I really hope i can crack this mystrey soon!
still any help would be invalueable

Thankyou

Jonathan
