Snipped

Married 1771 at King Stanley, Gloucestershire, to Anne Lusty By Licence,  . . . . [Marriage by Licence in this period indicates Non Conformity].

On the back of the Marriage Licence, handwritten was, " J. B. 12th May 1770 " and pre-dates the licence application which was 22 Feb 1771, could this be the details of his father and a death date, would this kind of information be requested from a Licence applicant?]

Adrian,

Even non-conformists had to be married in a C of E church didn't they?  I do not remember when the calling of Banns was introduced but if one wishes to be married in a C of E church nowadays, Banns have to be called in the couples's parishes.  For marriage without Banns, a licence is needed.

LDS Batch M046231 extracted from film 0855700 shows Banns of marriages and marriages and included in the batch is W.B's marriage.  Having to have a licence cannot be taken as an indication of his religeous persuasion.

What is puzzling is that the Rector, K Baghot, missed out W.B's marriage from his 1771 transcript for the bishop.  I've checked the years both sides - no luck :'(

Regards

Chas
