Looking for a Marriage 1800/04
« on: Wednesday 09 July 08 19:23 BST (UK) »
Hi all, Clutching at straws but desperate to find a Marriage of Sarah Spratley and John Foight/Voight.
1861 Census says Sarah born Croyden. Birth c.1774.
First child born 1805 Chepstow, Monmouth. John only ever on one Census 1841 which says he was born Foreign Parts. died 1850.
Yes, hopeless situation but hoping for a breakthrough after many years. Thanks, Syljun

Is she the Sarah Foight in the 1851 census in Chepstow, widow, baker and confectioner aged 76, born Tintern Abbey?

Yes. Cannot find evidence of birthplace being Tintern Abbey. 1861 Census Sarah living with daughter and family in Stepney. Birthplace put as Croydon Surrey.
Cannot find marriage anywhere. Must be somewhere. Husband John active member of Methodist Church, Chepstow so unlikely not to have married.
Two grandsons have middle name Spratley. Cannot find this name being attributed to father's side and as two other grandchildren have middle names of Foight, assuming Spratley may be Sarah's maiden name. Unusal name for a Christian name. Trying all ways to knock down wall. Any help welcome. Many thanks, Syljun

Hello Syljun.

I suppose you have seen the entry on the IGI.

Bap.Addington.Aug 5,1770.Sarah SPRATLY,dau of William and Jane.

I have checked this IGI entry with the WSFHS publication of the Addington Registers and it does check out.

Oddly, the surname does not appear again.

Addington is an adjacent parish to Croydon and for some Croydonians,Addington Parish Church was nearer than Croydon Parish Church.

KINCH,Berks.
RIDLEY,Surrey.
STREETER,Croydon.

Hi Dave, Thank you so much for info. on Sarah Spratley. I have been on I.G.I. but several Sarah Spratley. The info. on Addington certainly helps to narrow search. I do know John and Sarah had son called William so will try to look for more clues, if any.
The search for marriage looks to be more difficult but will keep trying. Thanks once again.
Regards,
Sylvia

Hi Sylvia

Just checked the Surrey Marriage Index which goes up to 1837 but nothing there.

Thank you Kerry, I much appreciate you looking at Surrey Parish Registers for marriage. I have searched Monmouth marriages but no luck. As John Foight was an Immigrant perhaps London could have the key somewhere . Many thanks, Sylvia

Actually Sylvia that's not a bad thought, I have a number of Surrey couples who married in London/Middlesex for some reason.  Definitely getting a check done up there.  Were there any family connections with any London areas?
