Scots at War Honour Roll
« Reply #1 on: Friday 31 March 06 15:29 BST (UK) »

Here is the Honour Roll for the  Scots at War - hope somebody finds their soldier here ! Interesting site !

http://www.fettes.com  Honour Roll has been removed from website 2013

The Scots at War Trust is a charity registered in Scotland with the Inland Revenue. The Trustees are responsible for the Scots at War Project and they raise funds for the Project.

“Scots” is interpreted in its widest sense. The Trust concerns itself with native Scots, those of Scots heritage, men and women who served in Scottish or Commonwealth Scottish units and those who
served in Scotland or in Scottish waters during the 20th and 21st centuries

Wills of Scottish soldiers who died in WW1 and WW2
« Reply #2 on: Sunday 04 June 06 04:43 BST (UK) »
The National Archives of Scotland have made public the informal wills of Scottish soldiers who died in WW1 and WW2

They are essentially pages from the soldier's pay book that indicate - who they wanted their personal effects & property to go to - in the event of their death -  they then list the name and address of the person they have nominated - sometimes there are occassionally additional snippets of information that can expand the story of a person !

Most of the wills are in good order -  but some have water damage and are difficult to read.

You can search to see whether a soldier's will exists at the Scottish NA by looking at their website, but to view them you must go to the Scottish NA in Edinburgh where you can print off a copy ( there are normally 3 sheets per soldier and the NA charge a fixed sum of 2 pounds 50 to print off up to 5 sheets - it then increases by 2 pounds 50 for every multiple of 5 thereafter )

http://www.nas.gov.uk/

They are in the process of scanning all the wills and some are not available yet

Glasgow area - Evening Times Roll of honour - WW1
« Reply #4 on: Tuesday 25 July 06 21:20 BST (UK) »
During the First World War, the Evening Times newspaper printed short obituaries of people, (mostly from the Glasgow area), who died or were reported missing in the war.

There is an index which can be searched at:-

http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries/the-mitchell-library/family-history/resources/evening-times-roll-honour/Pages/home.aspx

Most of these obituaries were accompanied by a photograph of these long-gone heroes, often now the only one that exists.
The Mitchell has produced an index to some 5,700 of these entries as a valuable addition to their Family History resources. This list is available to view in PDF format .
I searched the index on the web site listed above & was able to find that there was an obituary for my great uncle Abraham Walker who was killed in 1915.

The Mitchell Library holds copies of the relevenat Evening Times & you can obtain a copy of the obituary & if you're lucky a picture of the person.

The obituary for great uncle Abraham held a lot of information:-

Glasgow Evening Times Roll of Honour
Friday March 12, 1915

Mr James Walker, mason, 38 Windmillhill Street has been officially informed by the War Office that his son Private Abraham Walker (4768), 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers had been killed in action on the field on 17 February.  He enlisted as a bugler in the 5th Cameronians Scottish Rifles Volunteers in February 1891 at headquarters Airdrie and served in H Company Calderbank & Newarthill.  He acted as bugler until the regiment was disbanded.  He again enlisted in the 1st Lanark Royal Engineers Volunteers headquarters 21 Jardine Street, Glasgow.  When the war broke out in South Africa he volunteered for the front and was accepted for the first serious action, being presented with the Freedom of the City of Glasgow on the 15 February 1900.  His section was commanded by Major Lang.  He came through the Boer war without a scratch.  He served his apprenticeship with ex Provost Park, Hamilton Street, Motherwell and was working with a firm at the naval base going later to Gateshead.  When the present war was declared he enlisted at Newcastle Barracks on 7 August and a few days later was fighting in France.

Happy Hunting!

Scotland - Soldiers' and airmen's wills, 1857-1964
« Reply #5 on: Tuesday 08 May 07 11:06 BST (UK) »
Quote
The wills consist of special forms removed from soldiers' pay books, other army forms, or other documents. They are generally very brief and do not mention individual possessions. They contain limited personal or service history information.

About 31,000 wills survive, of which approximately 26,000 date from the First World War (WW I) and 4,700 from the Second World War (WW II). The rest belong to the period between 1857 and 1966. The wills were written by men up to the rank of warrant officer. About 100 wills exist of officers who were commissioned from the rank during WW I, and a few from WWII. There are wills of some Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and Royal Air Force (RAF) personnel from WW I, and of six women serving with the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) during World War II
