Ronnie and I have corresponded for many years. Last September we met up in Portarlington. He is a most knowledgeable  and amicable gentleman.

As you say a very nice man, I met him earlier this year when I was in Portarlington.

It was Ronnie who told me that the tendency was to Catholics to be Mathews with one "t" and for Protestants to be Matthews with two "t" in that area
Grant in Tipperary
Piper in Tipperary
Blong in Leix
Watson in Offaly
Pugh in North Wales
Evans in North Wales
Proctor in Edinburgh
Steedman in Stirling

Yes, I would say that 2 T's for Church of Ireland. In some of the early records the name is misspelt, so you have to double check.

Many of the names are in Coolbanagher Parish.  I have been collating the records.

Danishdots
Coolbanagher (Queens County, Ireland); North Creake (Norfolk); Aarhus (Denmark); Burntisland (Fife, Scotland); Rowlands Gill (Northumberland); Ballycarroll (Queens County, Ireland); Raheen (QueensCounty, Ireland)
