Completely stuck - ASTON family
« on: Saturday 12 July 08 19:51 BST (UK) »
Can anyone suggest some help or what to do next about finding my G-Grandfather - William Aston - birth certifcate / place / Date.

Going backward this is what I know:

Death : 24th Oct 1920, 16 Mason St, Stalybridge aged 46, occupation: Nail Cutter (journeyman)

Married : July 7th 1917 to Edith Barratt aged 40 (somehow aged 6yrs in the 3yrs between marriage and death!) in Christ Church, Dukinfield. Was a widower, occupation Bobbin Carrier, and lived 55 Castle St.
Father : Joseph Aston (deceased) who was a chain smith

They are the facts.

Rumours he was Master Freemason and that he walked from Scotland.

The only thing left I can think of are the electoral rolls - but how and where do you get access to them for 1917? or any local newspaper notices for marriage or death but don't know where to start with that either

Any other help ideas etc would be most gratefully received!

Thanks
Aston, Kennerley, Oxley, Evans, Bolshaw, Griffiths, Judd, Cox, Cutler, Tatterson, Arnold, Barratt

Pam / Ambers - Thanks for your help

Ambers I just found that exact census return last night, and think like you the occupations are similar - but how can I know I've found the right one?

So Pam if you have their previous info from 1851 & 1841 that would be most appreciated.

If this is right how could I use this information to find William's first marriage? - as then I'm thinking I could use his first wifes death to link it more readily to what i know

Hi Louise

Who were the witnesses to his marriage- they can often be very useful siblings  ;D

Do you have the details of his first marriage?

Again if you are stuck with a choice of a few to narrow down, getting the first marriage cert may help find him. It might tell us if Joseph was still alive then.

Carol

Hi Louise,

This is all part of the fun in finding relations, you never know until you find the proof to link them together...frustrating I know

I would do as Carols suggested, get the marriage certificate and fingers crossed that siblings are the Witnesses ;D

Hi

I have no information for Williams first Marriage. The witnesses to his second to Edith Barratt were Charles Joseph Watkins and Margaret Ann Watkins

There is no way of seeing who a witness is on a death certifcate without getting the certifcate is there? as that is the only way I think I will find his first marriage

Thanks again
