Hi am searching for any info on the following -
Mary Ann ballard born 1826/27 - on marriage certificate says father's name was Thomas. Census records in 1851 following her marriage say she was bornin Matlock, but been unable to find whether this was the case,

Cavalierdi,

Was Thomas a Framework Knitter and do you happen to know the names of any siblings? I think that this might be the family of Thomas Ballard (born 1786 Long Eaton, Derbyshire). Certainly it is the only family in my database with a daughter Mary of the right age and location for birth with parents of Thomas & Hannah. I have more if you want it.

Hi

Thomas was a framework knitter as it states on Mary Ann's wedding certificate to George Walker. Have checked your website and looked at the pedigree for Thomas and could be him. As the previous person on here put she had found Mary Ann's birth & baptism date as per below:-  Not sure why she would be baptised etc at Duffield when the census seems to suggest they lived Nottingham way??

Wesleyan Methodist Chapel of Duffield, Derbyshire baptisms 1814 - 1828
(RG4 / Piece 863 / Folio 31)
Mary Anne Ballard bapt 10 Sept 1826 born 27 July 1826
Abode Belper
Father Thomas Ballard Frame Work Knitter, mother Anne

Hello,

You do not state where the Marriage of Mary Ann Ballard and George Walker took place, was it the one
on Free BMd  December Q 1847 Derby 19 553?

If so this couple appear to be living in St. Peter's Parish Derby.
In 1851 George is a Cordwainer and Mary Ann States born Belper
     1861  "                Shoe Maker             "    "                         "
1871   "               Lace Maker        Mary Ann States born Matlock.

Perhaps I do not have the correct couple as you mention they appear to be in Nottinghamshire in the Census.

Further evidence that there were Ballad/Ballards' living in Belper, is the Strutt's Mill School Admission Records,
here you will find a William and Hannah, father was a frame work knitter and they were living in The Fleet and
Cow Hill Belper.  Although they appear to have different addresses, these two places were next to each other
and in old records are frequently mixed up.

It would help if you could give the details of the Nottinghamshire Census Info you have.

The comment about the nottingham census was in response to what the previous person had said about his records.

The marriage took place at the registry office in Derby as I have the marriage certificate. The addresses of both the bride and groom was in Derby  1847.
Thanks for the info  - will check it out

Hi,

It looks as if Thomas Ballard born 1786 Long Eaton, Derbys may have taken a 2nd wife:-

HO107/860 Folio 21 Pg 34 Line 17 Radford Nottinghamshire
Ballard, Thomas    50           Not born county
Hannah                 35               "
Mary                      15               "   [think this is your Mary Ann]
Elijah                      11           born in County
Rachael                    3            not born county
Martha                     1            born in County
Walters  Jemima                 15            not born in County
"             James                   12                "
"           Joseph                      8                 "

Note on Ancestry the following have been transcribed incorrectly
Elizah  =  Elijah   Bpt. 25.6.1831 Beeston, Notts son of Thomas Ballard & Ann
Walter = Walters

Thomas Ballard = Hannah Walters Duffield 5.6.1837

Thomas Ballard Bpt 20.6.1786 Sawley, Derbyshire Father Thomas Mother Rachel

The can be seen on the 1851 Census Radford Notts HO107/2129 Folio 339 Pg 9

Please let me know if you do not have access the the Ancestry Census to submit corrections to the
transcription errors, I will then make submissions.

Hi,

Forgot to say that because of the occupation of Thomas Ballard, he probably moved to Belper
to obtain work.

The two main firms in Belper letting out Frame Work Knitting machines were:-
Wards
and George Brettle & Co.
