Thomas Stevenson Baptism Lookup 1756
« on: Sunday 13 July 08 19:04 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm still battling to find my elusive Stevenson family although the name is very common in Sussex.
I am looking for the parents of one Thomas Stevenson b c1756 Burwash who according to the 1841 census was a Farmer at Witherhurst.  He is the father of John Stevenson b c1808 (John married Elizabeth Knapp/Nailor).  I have Thomas down as marrying Ann Dan although this could be wrong.  According to census information, the family up to this point were farmers with land, servants etc.  One, my ggg grandfather, was a Victorian Vet who went up North, ie pretty well-to-do as my nan said her grandparents felt her mother had married beneath her!

Any help on the Stevenson family would be greatly appreciated as this is one branch of my family which refuses to budge in any definite direction, unlike the Winchesters who were easily traced!

Regards
Steph

Hi steph

The marriage between Thomas and Ann Dann can be confirmed from the Sussex Marriage Index and looks likely as there are no other marriages with an Ann in that timeframe.

They married at Brightling, a few miles from Burwash on 16 July 1786.  Dann is quite a common name in Sussex.

One marriage in the timeframe for Thomas's parents in Burwash although a little early.

Robert Stevenson and Ann Hyland on 11 April 1737 at Burwash.

Might be worth making a note of.

Hi Steph - I've had a rummage in my notes and found...

Thomas Stevenson died in Burwash.
From familyhistoryonline
Burial - Thomas Stevenson 29th March 1845 age 91y - notes: Burwash Yard Mountfield All Saints Ssx.

1851 Census John born c1808 claims that he was born in Mountfield
1861 John says 'Somewhere in Sussex'
1871 John says Not Known.....  :-\

I did look at PR transcriptions of baptisms in Burwash 1699-1799 and found...and these were the only entries for Stephenson and/or any other varient of the surname between these dates.

1739 - Ann Stephenson dau of Robert and Ann
1740 - Robert Stephenson son of Robert and Ann

I guess the place to look next is Mountfield PR's, again, it's only a step along the raod from Burwash.

Hope this helps a bit
