S. Q.U.I.
« on: Thursday 17 July 08 11:30 BST (UK) »
Recently I was checking a gravestone inscription in Bovevagh Presbyterian churchyard and came across the name of a young man who died aged 19. After his name were the initials SQUI. Does anyone know what these mean?

Student Queens University Ireland?
What was his name and the date he died? The local newspaper might have mentioned this in his death notice. Have index to Londonderry Sentinel (1829-1869), Coleraine Chronicle (1844-1869) and can also check Belfast Newsletter (pre 1900).

Aghadowey,
Many thanks. You are a mine of information. I was checking for a lady in Canada. The man's name was John Moore Craig and he died on 13 May 1871. I should think that he came from the parish of Bovevagh and possibly the townland of Ballymoney. Again, many thanks.

Unfortunately indexes to Sentinel and Chronicle both only go up to 1869 and have just lost my link to Belfast Newsletter.

Probably just a coincidence but a John Moore Craig died 1845 in South Africa:

But surely the Queens Colleges (Belfast, Galway & Cork) were so named until 1908 ?

And is it significant that a John Moore Craig was murdered by Thomas Trainor, who was tried in July 1871 ?

"Queen's University in Ireland" founded 1845:

The date for the murder trial combined with the name of the victim seems a strong possibilty.
