Mother's Maiden Name?
« on: Friday 18 July 08 01:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone work out the mother's maiden name from this Scottish death certificate?

The father is Thomas Burgh, Architect, Newark on Trent, Deceased

The mother is Mary Ann Burgh, MS ??, Deceased

This is from an enhanced copy sent to me by Scotland's People, so I don't think it can be made any clearer.  I just cannot work out the maiden name though.

Thanks,

Debbie

Hi,

This is death of my 5x great grandmother Mary Ann Rae (MS Burgh).  She died in 1863 aged 84 (born about 1779).  Death was in Roseneath, Dumbarton.

I think that she may have been born in England (possibly Lincoln from a census record).

I have to admit I first thought the first letter was W, but it didn't seem to match the other Ws on the page.  An example is attached.  (The father of the death registered above this one was William - the W matched the W in widow).  No other letters seemd to match at all though.  That's why I thought I'd get more expert help here!!

Debbie

Hi Debbie

I can't think of any other letter that it can be other than a W - the N's are different. If you remove the flourishes from the W in widow, they do look similar.

We are agreed on Warr* (not war - that was a while back  ;D)
'en' is exactly the same in 'Trent'

It still looks like Warrener to me. I think it has to be a W and the last letter is a r like the double r in the middle of the word.
