Convict ancestors ??
« on: Saturday 19 July 08 08:04 BST (UK) »
If you have any, then you are in illustrious company.

in 1872 Mark Twain published a "burlesque biography" in his book "Roughing it".

For instance: Arthour Twain: ...  a solicitor on the highway in King Rufus' time. At about the age of thirty he went to one of those fine old english places of resort called Newgate, to see about something, and never returned again. While there he died suddenly.

This and similar occurences gave rise to a a "poor" witticism" made by one of his detractors, "that our family tree never had but one limb to it, and that one stuck out at right angles, and bore fruit winter and sommer."

Another ancestor was  Beau Twain "But bye and bye he took a contract to break stone for a road ... he was in the stone business  ... some forty two years. In fact, he died in harness. During all those long years he gave such satisfaction that he was never through with one contract for a week till the Government gave him another. And he was always a favourite with his fellow artists, and was a conspicuous member of their benevolent society called the Chain Gang. He always wore his hair short, had a preference for striped clothes, and died lamented by the Government ... for he was so regular."
