Death of a gt uncle
« on: Saturday 19 July 08 13:45 BST (UK) »
Hello, I've been away from the site for a while, to much work to do!

I'm trying to establish a family belief again. It is said that my Gt Uncle committed suicide before the first world war. I have found his orphanage records which confirm this now. A footnote on his papers says "committed suicide by hanging 25/12/1911" My auntie says also that the family said one of the family, ie this one, hanged themselves at home but I can't find a death registration for him.

Would there be a reason why it wouldn't have been done? I have tried for the whole of 1912 as well as 1911. In fact quite a few years either side throughout the country.

I'd appreciate any help as always.

His name was Thomas Henry Ellis b1878 in Hull and d 25/12/1911 presumeably in Hull

Thanks

Ian

Hi

I'm a bit puzzled

Born 1878 so by 1911 he would have been 34. What was his connection to an orphanage at that age?  If he hanged himself at home as you say above - I can't see the relevance to any annotation being put on orphanage records on any official basis

Hi Carole

Yes he was about 31ish apparently. His father was a trawlerman lost at sea in 1887. Thomas was put in the Seaman's Mission and orphanage along with my grandad and gt auntie as their mother could not provide for them all. She had two younger children to look after. The orphanage/mission kept records on them incl schooling etc and they returned each year on founders day to see how they were progressing after they had left. This was how they learnt about his death I would think.

Hope that make it a bit clearer than the Humber :D

Cheers

Ian - Not really relevant but my g.uncle was in Newlands Orphanage  in Hull too between 1901 and 1906.  As far as I know he didn't go back on Founder's Day, and he was killed in WWI.  Was that the same orphanage as your g.uncle?

Hi Lizzie

The Newlands Orphan Home was where my Dad always presumed his dad was but through my research on the tree it turns out he was actually in the Seaman's Mission and Orphanage. This was on Spring Bank, where the Iceland freezer shop is now, I believe.

Cheers

Ian

I've heard of the Seaman's Mission and Orphanage, but Hull Archives did a search for me and sent me the details of my g.uncle's admission etc. at Newlands.

I don't know Hull at all, so I don't know where the Iceland shop is.

Hi Lizzie

Quite a co-incidence in a way as Hull Archives did the search for me for Newlands and came up with the Mission!

Also, I see from your profile that you're in Hampshire. Guess what, I'm originally from Hull but now live and work in Hampshire.

Speaking of work, must go back to it now.

Cheers

Hi Ian
There is a possible death entry on Freebmd for a Thomas ELLISS in Q4 of 1911 in Sculcoates, aged 33.

It wouldn't be the first time that I've found one of my Ellis' given an extra 's'

Hi Bee

On a break at work so will check it out later.

It certainly looks as though this could be him. I tried all sorts of different spellings but must have missed the most obvious. Stupid really, people quite often give me the extra E.

Thanks  so much for your help. :D
