The details of Walter T Chidgey's death in WW1 are on the Commonwealth War Grave Commission site.

Walter was a Private in the Somerset Light Infantry, service number 16682. He died on 13/06/1915 age unknown. Grave number I.D.4 Talana Farm Cemetery.

You would be able to obtain his service papers (these maybe online) and see what further information they contain.

Looking at BMD the birth registration of Walter T Chidgey/Coles seems to be in the September quarter 1887 in Williton RD. There is a Walter Thomas Coles registered there, Vol 5c Page 290.

Williton RD covers the area of Stogursey and places round there.

Charles CHIDGY married Catherine COLES, Mar qtr 1846, Williton, 10 851

Catherine CHIDGY buried Kilton 8 Aug 1853 aged 42.

Catherine COLES baptised Kilton, 2 Jun 1811, d/o Jeremiah/Mary

No CHIDGY or variation in Kilton PRs before 1837, Sophia d/o George and Harriet bapt 24 Dec 1837.

Thomas was born before his parents were married by the look of it, hence being known as COLES or CHIDGY.

Charles and Kitty had another son William, bapt 2 Aug 1846 at Kilton.

Thomas' baptism was a private one as well.

There is a Charles CHIDGEY death in both Jun and Dec qtrs of 1850 which could be Thomas and William's father. Why he would not show up in 1851, but where is Kitty.

There is a Charles CHEDGEY, son of Samuel and Fanny bapt at Over Stowey, 14 Apr 1822. This would make him 38 and old enough to be Sarah and Thomas' father. Census says 33 though.

Definitely same family I would say.

1881 Thomas is Thomas COLES, in Stogursey. Thomas COLES in Kilton in 1871.

This is just amazing Ian, no wonder I have been having such a difficult time finding them... Thomas' grandson Albert always said the Chidgeys were from Over Stowey and I have found several in the area, a very local name but couldn't make the link, but if his father Walter was reg as Cole no wonder! thank you so much, I wonder why they kept switching names?? especially as Charles and catherine married....

Thanks also Jo for your information, I had actually found Walter T military record with previous help on rootschat, hoping that would lead to his date of birth..interesting that he became Chidgey...I do believe that the Coles had a bit of a name in the area, perhaps that could be it. His son Albert+3 siblings were so young when his father was killed and his mother remarried and had another 3children so he knew very little of his father, no photo's as far as I know!

Ian where do you recommend that I look for the census' you have used, there are so many sites to chose from, I would like to see the neighbours you mention too...

me again.. what do you say that Catherine/kitty had been married before - looks as if she was 10yrs older than Charles. and that in 1851 james and Sarah were older than Thomas, who as suspected was born before his parents married... but then she wouldn't have been a Coles would she..curiouser and curiouser..

I don't think Kitty was married before, Denise. She was just a single mum, apparently.
