New Brunswick records are very good and lots available online.

Births, death, marriages, newspaper obits., etc.:
http://archives.gnb.ca/Archives/Default.aspx?culture=en-CA
A William James Crothers d.1943 Kings Co.
An Isabella Crothers d.1936 Kings Co.
Exact dates from above website.

1901 and 1911 census here: www.automatedgenealogy.com (scanned image has more detail than transcribed page).

1901 census lists William and wife with 3 sons. Youngest one is Robert elbourne Crothers born 4 July 1900 Waterford (mother Isabelle Buchanan)

1911 census there are 3 sons and 1 daughter

Now I'm confused. Your first post said:
james crothers born 1915/16 england
And now:
was james born in newcastle new brunswick 19/11/1916 ?
strong possibility william/isabella was james grandparents,
 charles his father

New Brunswick births only go up to 1913 on PANB website. Under the rules I doubt you will be able to apply for a birth certificate but see here to make sure:
www.canadianbirthcertificate.com/new_brunswick.html

Does the above post mean that you aren't sure if James is Charles' son?

hi aghadowey,
 your confused so was i
i had the daughter of james here and  now it looks like james was born newcastle in canada and not the uk
he came back to the uk in 1957 and married maureen fothergill in london
but apparantly he married someone called ethel  in canada about 1936 and had a son, name not known
does this make it simplier
charles/isabella  were the right ones so now she can go back at long last with that one
many many thanks  linda

Thanks for clearing up the conflicting information. It will be very easy, using online sources like the PANB site, to go back from William and Isabelle Crothers but tracing James will be much more difficult as more recent records aren't always online or are restricted as in the case of James' birth certificate.
