Mattingley Henley-on-thames look up
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 11:30 BST (UK) »
Working through the next level back to Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. I have conflicting info from another familiy member. Presently trying to trace the parents of Thomas James Gairns Mattingley. b, 17 Nov 1843. I believe that there are other members of the same family in the Henley-on-Thames area. The claim is his parents were John Thomas Mattingley and Elizabeth Ann Long? Like all info it's essential to confirm. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have Thomas's birth certificate - this would confirm his parents' names (including mother's maiden name)?

Hi,

From Henley St Marys PRs, courtesy of an Oxon FHS CD:

Baptised Feb 23 1845 Thomas James Mattingley s/o John Thomas, an upholsterer, and Elizabeth Ann.

He's the only Thomas James Mattingley in the indices.

Jill

HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Hi Tati,
Thanks for the info it looks very promising indeed as I have a confirmed birth place for Thomas James Gairns Mattingley as Henley-on-Thames. I will look at the UK atlas and see how close Reading, St Giles is to Henley. Some of the offspring match the rough info I have from our cousin. There is an exact match in the very unusual name "Montom" I have "Montem". Apparentley there were 11 offspring. I note that Fanny was born in Henley! Must be the family. :) Thank you for the instant help.

Montom, hat a name! FreeBMD spells is Montam but it looks like Montom on the original index.

Hi Pennie
I don't have the birth cert. I only have his lenghthy occupation record as a Teacher in Toowoomba, Qld where I noted his DOB and Nationality as English (Henley-on-Thames). Will need to visit the State Library in Melbourne to get the BDM info. PS FYI his salary as a teacher in 1883 Qld was £100 (in Australia)

I just noticed the anomaly in John's occupation - an upholsterer in 1845 and a brewer in 1851!!

So, I looked up the baptisms for the other children on the 1851 census, as provided by Tati:

Aug 24 1838 (born July 23 1838) Amelia Fanny d/o John Thomas, upholsterer & Elizabeth

Sep 2 1840 (born May 27 1840) Ellen Elizabeth - father still an upholsterer.

Sep 9 1846 Montom Edward - father still an upholsterer

both baptised Aug 22 1849 (doesn't give birth dates) Alfred Joseph & Elizabeth Jemima - father still an upholsterer

That's it, so it looks as if their ties to Reading precipitated the change in occupation. Perhaps a relative died and left them the brewing business?

They didn't marry in Henley - more likely in Reading?

Jill

Just seen the 1841 census - will look to see if the 2 oldest children - Charles & Albert were baptised in Henley. I might have missed them.
