The 1901 census has a William J Chads, 8, b Queensland (RG13/2368), whose father, Harry C Chads, 40, b Portsmouth, was a major in the army (infantry).

An Australian birth would account for his absence in the index.

Hi lindy-lou,

Have you searched the Service/Pension records that are available on www.ancestry.co.uk ?  If his records have survived you might find some more info.

Hello Lindy-lou,

Major H C Chads also appears to be related to Lt H C Chads and Major H F Chads as he applied for both their medals after their deaths.

Hi Lindy-Lou

There were two men called William Chads with medal index cards for WW1. Captain William John Chads MC who served with the Royal Field Artillery, and Private William G Chads who served with a number of Scottish Regiments. The latter's records appear not to have survived.

William John became a Captain on 3 November 1917. He seems to come from a long line of army officers.  In 1891 there is a William J Chads, 60, a major in the General Reserve, and in 1871 there is another William, Wm C Chads, 81, Lt in the RMLI (presumably retired on half-pay).

If you search the National Archive website you discover there is a set of documents for a Major H F Chads who appears to have served from 1908 to 1923. These will probably be original documents, so you will have to visit Kew.

hi
thanks to you all.........i have managed to account for all the other "Chads" and where they fit into family tree....WS Chads is proving to be a mystery...have wondered if his middle initial has been mis-entered on docs....i have had no luck finding service records on ancestry, i'll go back to the "drawing board to see if i have mis-interpreted info i have...

Have you come across "W S Chads" anywhere other than his medal card entry?

I notice that "H F Chads" has six different entries (presumably there were not six different people) so it is possible that "W S Chads" is the same as one or both of "W J Chads" and "William John Chads". Perhaps you will need to look at the entry for "W S Chads" to see if he has been mistranscribed, particularly if that is the only reference to him? Unfortunately it will cost you £3.50.

Service records of officers are not on Ancestry. They will be original documents in Kew, so you will have to visit.

If you are still around on this topic, from my database of Pembrokeshire related military heastones 1722 to 2006 I note that, Major H.F. Chads M.C. of the Border Regt., was killed in a flying accident at Castlebar County Mayo Ireland in September of 1920, he had only recently completed duty at Dublin.

This is one of approximately a 1,000 pembroke related references that I have not yet established the location of his headstone, but previous he had been stationed at Pembroke Dock.

I have over 2,700 Pembs military headstone jpegs with background research, but this is the only reference to Chads I have.
