***COMPLETED***The name NED
« on: Monday 24 January 05 23:52 GMT (UK) »
This may seem like a strange question to ask but is the name Ned short for anything or is it just a name in it's own right.

I have found a black & white photo, which has been made into some kind of presentation card,  stuck in an old family bible.  It's a picture of a man in uniform and written inside is From Ned, To Mr & Mrs J T Jones, with best wishes etc etc.

Mr & Mrs Jones were my G Grandparents but I am curious to find out who Ned was.

Thanks.

Jan :)

Hello,

Not sure how to answer about whether it's a name in its own right - by in my family it is always used as a  short-form of Edward.

Hope this helps

Thanks Jonathan ;)

It had already crossed my mind that it might be short for Edward but I wasn't sure ???

The man in question may of course have just been a good friend to my G Grandparents.  I'm hoping he was a relative because that would mean I have another black and white pic to add to my collection :D

Jan,

Old photos are always a welcome find I think.  Hope you find your Ned or Edward!

In transcribing for FreeBMD I've never come across Ned as a name in its own right.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

I have a Victorian book, which amongst other things lists contemporary name abbreviations in common usage, and NED is down as the short form of EDGAR.
