Shaw, Deegan, Coop & Pollock Search
« on: Monday 28 July 08 00:09 BST (UK) »
Hi There,

Im 18 and Have Just Started My Family History Search.
Ive Found Some Files In Archway Archives Of My Grandfather, Walter George Shaw ( Currently Waiting On My Copy), He Married Roberta Joy Pollock.
Walter Was Born 21 January 1921, His Parents Were Mary Beatrice Deegan and Father John Thomas Shaw.
Roberta was born 23 April 1926, her parents are Mary Mararet Ballantyne Coop and Ian McMillan Pollock.

What Im trying to figure out is there parents and also any information. I Think Mary Deegans Dad May Be Edward Deegan But Im Not Certain

Also Anyone In Dunedin Go to Archway Archives? As It Costs $25 to get each file, i was wondering if anyone goes there and could take photos or if there isnt many pages get copies of the files id like? As if you dont view it its $25 + 50 cents per page..
I Also have a file in auckland archway archives im interested in if anyone goes there?

Thanks Heaps!

Hi xowee-shortieox

Welcome to RootsChat and Genealogy/Family History.
Beware!!  It is VERY addictive and can blow the budget!!

A good rule of thumb is to start with what you know (you, your parents & grandparents), confirm it, then move backwards one step at a time (Death, Marriage, Birth).

It is very tempting to race ahead in the excitement of it all, but you really do need to “dot Is and cross Ts” if you want to do things properly and save time later on.

I’m sure I speak for most of us by saying that we have all got carried away on a wave of discovery and found out later that we have somehow grabbed the wrong “John SMITH”.

Preaching over!!
 ;D ;D ;D

So what certificates or printouts do you have?

A point to remember when requesting NZ records is to always ask for a PRINTOUT rather than a certificate as they contain more information AND they are cheaper.

Check the “stickies” at the top of the board to see what information is available on the different records.
The NZ records are great for the amount of information that is recorded.

Bren

Hi Bren,

At the moment the only information i do have is My grandparents Birth certificates.
Im mainly only doing my dads side for the time being.
So i know My grandparents names and there bday and there parents.
I never realised how hard Trying to trace all the steps were.

nah, steps are easy just take little ones,   :)

Forget the wills for now, you are a NZ crew,

John T SHAW  married  Mary DEEGAN   in       1900    /   folio number [5434]

Mary COOP  married  Ian POLLOCK   in          1924     /   foilo no. [03169]

So purchase these two certificates FIRST or as Kiwibren says a printout of the original entry.

Then get yourself a couple of exercise books (like school ! 1Bs etc) and go to library and get a copy of a genealogy STARTER book.  Rozs book up in the stickys (top of this page) is a good one for kiwis.

Also get in contact with all the eldest members of each branch and set up some time for a wee chat, not right now, but soon.

So start with ordering those marriage certs, HEAPS of good info from these far more than probates and get some books (exercise and starter).

If you live in a decent sized town ask at local library whats available.

 :)

remember SLOW but SURE.

There are lots of us on RC who have purchased CDs from NZSG
http://www.genealogy.org.nz/

which contain various information on Marriages, Burials, etc., so if you ask for a specific event for a specific person, you may get the answer back within minutes!!
Births & Deaths are mostly on fiche at Libraries.

If you are in NZ and use the 0800 number to order printouts, you can have them within the week, despite the fact that they advise 8 working days + delivery time.
I have ordered on a Monday and had them in my letterbox on a Wednesday or Thursday.
It just depends on how busy they are.

The waiting for the printouts is the hardest part, so that you can go back another generation.……

Don’t try to look at the whole picture all at once, or you will get overwhelmed by it all.

Yes a great book by Ros!
Even my little Library has a copy.

Good luck!

There are some areas which are member only.
You can check out what information is available on CD, and therefore ask more specific questions.
The majority of CDs are available for purchase by non-members, but as mentioned before, someone on here will be able to do a lookup for you.

Printouts are generally $20 as opposed to $26 for certificates.
Hope the book doesn't take too long as it has lots of great websites.
