GOOGLEGANGERS [ Found an ancestor when 'Googling]
« on: Monday 28 July 08 06:57 BST (UK) »
I had the idea to look for 'Googlegangers' and typed in 'Thomas Gaunt'
I found a place called Thomas Gaunt House in Maryville, Missouri, USA.

Looks interesting I thought.
It gave details of the house, and then the man who built it and lived there.
Thomas Wooley Gaunt, and details of his birth in Staffordshire.
Hang on I thought, I recognise the name. Sure enough there he is, in my tree.

Thomas was descended from my 5x great grandfather Joseph and his third marriage. [ I am descended from his first]

The site gave details of his marriage and birth of his children and his service in the Civil War.
He was a farmer and purchased land and built the house and planted many species of trees.
The house still stands and is the residence of the University President.

Now to look for his descendents !

Try looking for a 'Googleganger', you never know who or what you might find.

Absolutely right - but don't just rely on Google.  There are plenty of other search engines which may well turn up different results.
And a tip - putting someone's name and nothing else into a search engine is only likely to pay off if it's an uncommon name.  Usually you will need to add some other term, like a place name.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.
