I also came to the conclusion that the first 3 daughters probably had a different mother. There are a couple of candidates on the IGI, but as the daughters had fairly common names it is difficult to be sure. I found several entries which looked as though they aught to fit but were out by 10 years, unless they waited until the children were older to have them christened. I have seen that happen before in other families.

He had 3 wives!!Janet Brown,Mary Lamb and Janet Hardie
I have James' birth as 17/11/1794,
 married Mary Lamb in 11/5/1818
married Janet Hardie in 1825
married Janet Brown 2/2/1836

I seem to have details of the next generation - Louisa, George, Mary,Agnes etc but have come to a stop there.

The OPRs  have the following baptism:

Polmont, Stirlingshire

 25 November 1794 James Rankine s/o James Rankine and Mary Main


I've also possibly found Louisa on the MIs for Dalry.

Did Louisa marry a David Cowan and die in 1914, aged 78?  If so, a possible son, John, d. Glasgow in 1911, aged 55.

I have info on his ancestors but am looking for his descendants.

However, if you are trying to locate descendants, it's going to take a lot of searching (and units) on SP to find marriages and births and deaths. The censuses will only take you so far.

A simple search on the IGI ( www.familysearch.org ) has the following children to David Cowan and Louisa Rankine  in Dalry:

13 Sept 1860 Janet Brown Cowan
3 Nov 1861 Mary Cowan
10 April 1863 David Cowan
28 Dec 1864 Louisa Forbes Cowan
18 March 1866 Agnes McMichael Cowan
11 Jan 1868 James Rankine Cowan
8 October 1869 Jane Charlott Hannah Cowan

As I said in a previous message, given that you know the names of the children of James Rankine and Janet Brown, it would be fairly easy for you to find their marriages and children via the IGI and Scotlands People.

That's good news - I had a similar experience when I was searching for my KKD families - lots of Canadian relatives with documents 

If you can get over to the Ewart Library in Dumfries, there might be a lot more info.
