The best bet would be to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and search through the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census returns. They are all indexed by name. If you have more of an idea of the area in Scotland it would help

Do you know when James and Mary married? You can probably find their marriage certificate - you might need to look at a few to get the right ones but they are not that expensive at 6 pounds for 30 page credits - I have found them an absolute godsend  That will give you where they married and their parents names.
