1851 Unfilmed census - Salford / Manchester
« on: Tuesday 05 August 08 09:54 BST (UK) »
 :)
Hello, big favour to ask.

Please could you do some look ups for me on your copies of the unfilmed census pages - probably Salford, I think?

I am looking for:
1) Sarah GRIFFITHs,
born abt 1834 Warrington (though in 1881 she said Manchester), father John. She married in 1854 and I have never found her under her maiden name yet.

2) Charles and Lucy HYDE and family.
They were at Boundary Road, Salford Trinity in 1841, and at 3, Coopers Court, Queen Street, Salford Trinity in 1861.

If any people with the surname SELLERS - or even CELLERS - are living with Charles and Lucy, they are children of her first marriage. I am interested in Thomas, Robert and Richard. So please would you also check separately for:

3) Robert SELLERS
born abt 1830, Cooper's Court Salford
In 1841 he was at Boundary Road with Charles and Lucy. In 1861 he was at 1, Providence Place, Salford.

All the Lancashire birth and death certificates I have had so far for this branch of the family have been from Regent Road and Greengates, so I am hopeful they may be on your census pieces.

Very grateful for your offer of help. I shall send you a PM as well - when I've explored again how I do that!  :-\

Many thanks and best wishes,

Edwina

There are several Sarah GRIFFITHs, but none looks like yours. The only remote possibility I can see is an 18 year old, Salford born,  weaver visiting Eliza GRIFFITHS.

There is a GRIFFITHs family living next door to the HYDEs.
These are John (24, born Flint), wife Sarah (25, born Saddleworth), and daughter Ann (1, born Salford).

I've only looked at Greengate and Regent Road. Someone else may be able to spot her there or further afield.

Dear skb (Are you the same person as Scoobeuk?),

Thank you so much for this. The HYDE / SILLERS-HYDE entries are definitely mine.  :D

So too is Thomas SILLERS the confectioner, I think, even though 'Liverpool' is a big surprise and a definite question mark! A cousin had identified him as a confectioner some years ago. Also his wife died late in 1851, so I can recognise the address from her death certificate. Hmmm... have to think about him. :-\

Sarah GRIFFITHs is still a bit of a mystery. The next-door-neighbour connection is very attractive, as she could have met Robert through John GRIFFITHS (age 25) if he was an older brother... and perhaps also both related to Eliza GRIFFITHS in some way.

I think when I looked through the census films some years ago, GRIFFITHS was a surprisingly uncommon name in Manchester and Salford. So, still inconclusive, but then, every possibility I eliminate is a bit of progress!!

I'll stop rambling now and say, 'Thank you very much for your help.' This is so useful.

Best wishes,

Edwina
