Looking at the ts at the end of Margaret and Robert , it does look like it ends in a t, so agree with Prue - it's  Prat  :)

 ;D ;D ;D

That's OK!  I don't feel neglected, believe me...I get more than enough attention now that I'm a mod... :-\ ;D

Hi Gadget
No census reference, but have ages and place of birth. Very new to this and don’t understand it all yet.

Hi mck - like Gadget says, just ask and we'll help  :)  Everyone has to start somewhere.  With census records, you should always record the references for your families so you can find them again, and so you can direct other people to the records if you need to.  Hopefully Gadget will be able to find you the 1881 reference so you will know what they look like and where to find them  :)

Cheers
Prue

Just a thought mck, and I apologise if I'm stating the obvious.

Are you aware of where to look for a copy of the marriage record that Gadget found.  I don't mean the IGI record, I'm referring to ScotlandsPeople. (SP)

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/users/registration.aspx

There are some good tips on how to make best use of SP elsewhere on RootsChat so shout if you want a pointer to them.

And of course, I agree with Gadget and Prue regarding the help you'll find through RC.

Here's the 1881. It's interesting because by lookiing at the birthplaces of the children, it's possible to work out approximately when they moved to Roxburghshire. James, aged 4 was born Aberdeen shire and Mary, aged, 2 was born in Hawick - so roughly between 1877 and 1879:

1881 census-
10 Dickson Street, Wilton, Roxburghshire
Reg District/volume: 810 Enumeration District(ED):3 Page: 21

Robert Sutherland, 35, wool spiner, b. Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire
Margaret, 32, b. Woodside, Aberdeenshire
Jane, 14, wool factory worker, b. Old Machar, Aberdeensjhhire
Robert, 12, scholar, b. Woodside, Aberdeenshire
George, 10, scholar, b. Woodside, Aberdeenshire
James, 4,  b. Woodside, Aberdeenshire
Mary, 2, b. Hawick, Roxburghshire

Hi Janice

Have you had a read through this:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,43916.0.html

I tend to put in as little info as possible and use wild cards. Then I narrow the search down until I just have a page full and select from there.
