A Long Shot Completed with thanks
« on: Tuesday 12 August 08 09:53 BST (UK) »
I have been told that my ancestors owned a boarding house in Hackney, but do not know of their last names. I know they still owned the boarding house in the 1930's. I am sure the christian name is a Rose

The address was 88 Nichols Square, Hackney, i know it got demolished years ago.

I was wondering and hoping if anyone can search for who owned it and whether it was in the directory.

I am sorry i am vague on this, this has only come to light in the past day or two
and no more info has come forward on this

Any help will be most grateful

Pam

Electoral rolls?
Property taxes?
can you get to Hackney from essex? The local library or LMA is probably the best bet.

There is nothing listed for that address in either the 1934 or the 1938 PO Directories.

1901 census address search lists an  88 Nichols Sq,  London which is occupied - but Shoreditch not Hackney

Civil Parish: St Leonards Shoreditch.  Ecclesiastical Parish: St Chad Haggerston   Parliamentary Borough: Haggerston    Metropolitan Borough: Shoreditch

If you have credits you could look this up

Thank you Shaun & Ecneps and Pauline for your replies.

I have just sent a letter off this morning to my 3rd cousin who told me about the boarding house, i am hoping she will tell me more if and when i get a reply.
It is a shame she did not put her phone number in the letter she wrote me

Hi Pam,

No, the 1901 census online:
http://www.1901censusonline.com/

unfortunately I had no credits left to look it up, the address search is free though, I just entered 88 Nich*  and found that one, the only 88 Nichols Squ in London, it seems.  It was occupied, but no name until you use credits!

The occupants in 1901 are John & Mary Marks, plus boarders.
