I wonder whether in fact James & Phoebe, despite living as husband and wife, never actually married?  If so, this might have been simply because they never got around to it - but also could be that either or both of them remained married to somebody else.

It's worth bearing in mind as a possibility, especially if no obvious death for Ann can be found.  It would be most unusual for a mother voluntarily to leave her child, but not impossible - and of course she might have been in an institution.

Anna

Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)

It is definitely a possibility.

It is also possible that Phoebe was just not there on census night in 1841 (although she wasn't anywhere else either as Phoebe Parkinson)

Another problem is that to be able to discount the Pheobe France  who married James Parkinson in 1834...I need to be able to find themin 1841 (unless she died very soon after marriage).  But I can find no trace.

It got me wondering if Phoebe was not actually her real name.

Besides the ones you tried, I have found Phoebe transribed as Pheobe and Phobe. Enumerators not very good at spelling! Chris

Not sure if this is any use . . found the following.
Based on Buttercups find of baptism for Joseph in 1833, parents James and Ann.
Marriage for a James Parkinson to an Ann White in 1831. IGI.
Marriage for a James Parkinson to a Phoebe France 10th March 1834, St. Mary, Blackburn, Lanc. IGI

If this is the case then James first wife Ann died between 1833 (birth of Joseph) and 1834, marriage to second wife.
Perhaps she died at childbirth.
Parish records might have her burial details.

Just a thought.

sorry, just noticed you had the marriage to Phoebe France.

Thanks Margaret

Yes - Phoebe France is the only option I keep coming back to ...but other rootschatters thought the distance a little too far and there  is also the question of where she got to in 1841.

I have not found Ann's burial details yet. nor have I seen the original parish record for Phoebe France marriage .

It's a mystery ??? ???
