Have seen birth announcement for twin daughters born in 1885. Checked in Scotland's People births for female Mitchells born 1885 and only found 2 consecutive ref. numbers for Greenock area- Margaret Steven (may be Stevens or Stevenson) and Catherine McDon..

The 1891 and 1901 entries sound possible.

Although Robert's obituary says he had 7 children I wonder if there weren't more. Obit. lists those living: John (born 1879), Robert, David, Matilda and Elizabeth (born c1897?-died 1960). There was also a daughter Annie (died 1937) and presumably another son (was a grandson R. Mitchell in Belfast in 1942). Also have a Margaret Mitchell who married in 1901 that I think might be a daughter (the Margaret born 1885??)

Thanks Elaine but 1891 family doesn't look too good- Robert's age way off (c1861 instead of 1836) and only child's name that matches up is Matilda (and unfortunately I don't know her birthdate), no son John (born 1879)...

Thanks again Carole. Can't believe this is the correct Robert and Matilda either- he was a carpenter or 'engineer' who painted banners but can't picture them at a spa.
Still haven't heard from man who's posted the 1942 obituary on 3 or 4 websites and I'm hoping he'll know more.
