Chadwick Amstrong
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 18:45 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I have a Chadwick Armstrong in my tree (not a direct descendant) that someone else has enquired about and has started a little fire inside of me wanting to know what happened to him.

He was born in Manchester 11 Feb 1865 and according to a the person who brought him to my attention disappeared in the early 1900's (his wife died in 1903).

I have found a Chadwick Armstrong in the attestation papers of the Canadian overseas Expeditionary force.

On it shows his address in Canada and his date of birth 7 years younger than the Chadwick Armstrong i'm looking for but the weird thing his his birthdate is the same 11th Feb but in 1872 (typo looks like 1972) this would make him 45, was there an upper age limit to sign up (so he may have lied about being 50)?.

I would appreciate an Information on this Chadwick Armstrong

Thank you.

 - shows Chadwick Armstrong heading to Canada in 1907.  He should be on the 1911 census, but I can't see him.

Sadly, it appears that Chadwick died in 1917:

His CWGC entry does not give much information:

He is also listed on the Canadian war memorial:

Thanks for the passenger list, that adds a bit more to the equation

What i need now is some sort of immigration record for Canada.

Thanks once again.

The incoming 1907 passenger record indicates he was a carpenter, aged 37, and was bound for Victoria, BC.

His WWI service record gives a better address for his mother Elizabeth as 304 Lower Boughton Road, Manchester.  Indicates he is a widower with three children: Sidney Charles, 12, Lily, 15, and Florence, 9.  He died of nephritis on 16 March 1917.  His separation allowance was sent to his children's guardian, Mrs Fletcher Armstrong, The Cliff, Broughton, Manchester.

I believe he shows up on the 1911 Census as C.F. Armstrong, aged 37, born Aust (mistake by census taker copying entry from above), ethnicity England, carpenter, immigrated 1910, living in Vancouver, born Feb. 1873. Anglican. Living in a hotel with several others.
