Nethy Bridge Churchyard
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 20:55 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone tell me if this churchyard is accessible?

I've only just discovered my Great-Grandfather is buried there and as I'm going to Aviemore for my honeymoon soon I thought I'd try and find his grave and lay some flowers.

Also could anyone tell me who to contact to try and find where he's buried. I imagine he has a headstone (or at least had one) as his body was flown home from Hastings where he was living at the time so it seems the family had some money so I expect they probably bought one.

Thanks
Julz

"Abernethy Church" and graveyard is actually bit out of Nethybridge on the back road to Grantown on  Spey. The churchyard is fairly small, but large enough when you are looking for a grave and dont know whereabouts it is. Like many such locations, many of the older gravestones are hard to read. It's in a lovely - but exposed - location, with the ruined Castle Roy nearby. It is accessible at all times, so far as I can recall. (The Nethybridge website has a map http://www.nethybridge.com/html/views_maps/villagemap.php - you need to take the B970 road from Nethy to Grantown)

You might be interested to know that the graveyard contains the graves of the only two police officers murdered in the course of the duty in the Highlands, from different eras and different counties! (PC James Fraser, Elginshire, stabbed in Grantown in 1878, and PC Thomas King, Inverness-shire, shot at Tulloch, Nethbridge in 1898).

You can see their graves at:

(PC Fraser): http://www.flickr.com/photos/conner395/802886473

hope this helps

I saw one of the police graves whilst photographing war graves for The War Grave Photographic Project so took a picture.

I later contacted the Police Roll of Honour Trust to see if they were interested in photographs of the graves of police officers on their Roll of Honour.  They were so I sent my picture and promised to take one of the other grave when I went back to photograph another war grave there.

It might be worth you contacting them and offering your photographs for their records.

Good, I don't think they are using the pictures at the moment but perhaps ones day they will have them on the website.

Plenty of war graves to photograph if you want something to photograph  ::)
