SWALES in Malew and Rushen
« on: Monday 18 August 08 19:11 BST (UK) »
I am researching family of James SWALES and Harriet Jane TYZACK who migrated to the Isle of Man from Yorkshire in the late 1870s.  So far I have the following:

SWALES, James b abt 1848 Wolverhampton, Staffordshire  d 8 Jan 1935 Malew, IOM. He was a watchmaker.
m1) Harriet Jane TYZACK b 1852 Sheffield  d Sep 1881 Malew, IOM (her last name is listed as SHEFFIELD on birth record for Frances)

---Vere Lawrence b 1871 Sheffield, Yorkshire   m Lucy WELLS or WILLS

---Ada L b 1873 Sheffield, Yorkshire

---William Edward b 1876 Yorkshire  d 1950 Rushen, IOM   m Adelaide Lillian TYSON

---Frances Charlotte b Apr 1879 Malew, IOM

 m 2) Emma Elizabeth WALLACE  b abt 1866 d 1936 Malew, IOM

I am interested because of the connection to a branch of our TYZACK family.  I have information to share on them.
If you know this SWALES family, please reply or contact me.

interested as I have (on www.manxnotebook.com) under photographers
cdv: Castletown. This is probably James Swales, 'Copper Miner and Publican' who kept the Public House at Derbyhaven in 1881; from census data would apprear to have arrived on Island from Sheffield c. 1878.
In 1907 IoM Illustrated advertises as 'Watchmaker, Jeweller, Silversmith and Optician' (dealing in Photographic materials) Malew St Castletown, 'Established 1884''
A son ? V L Swales seems to have continued in photography business - there was an earlier Swales in douglas/Castletown after 1843
any thing with a Manx Connection

Hello,

Since posting my message I also found some additional information online:

1. Photographs of a Herring Fishery taken by V L SWALES in 1910

Perhaps there are other photos of local scenes that are attributed to him?

2. A vignette of Mr Vere Lawrence SWALES who was also a Methodist minister on the Primitive Methodist Plan for the Castletown circuit:

v l swales was a local preacher not a minister - you can review the various roles in the Methodism section on Manxnotebook - there will be many photos attributable to, these were the only ones used by the Examiner in its annual yearbook.
