My Grandad was a Carter but he worked down the mines.

I assume he filled the little coal carts.

Brings back memories - My grandad always gave his crusts and some polos to them, he was a softie for animals. :)

A carter in a coal mine drove a horse and cart along the underground roads, he did not fill the tubs that was done by a filler.
