That was it - Johann Carl Ludwig is Louis. 

The further I looked the more sure of it I became.

Maria Sophia was his brother Gustav's Wife

Not sure yet which brother Johann Heinrick Friedrick may be.

Can you see any marriages for Johann Carl Ludwig "Louis" to one or two "Lina"s or anything on these Hamster girls?

So it would appear that the brothers parents died at sea in 1849 on their way to join their sons in South Australia.

Hi Jenn,

Yes we have the arrivals. We have births to Louis and Frederika Caroline HAMSTER in 1849 and then to Lina/Lena CHOTTEE/KOTTE/COTTA 1852-1856 and then there is a marriage to Honora DONGHNEZ/GY in 1860.

We have no marriages or deaths for these two first "wives".

There is another Kotte in the SA indexes (wife of Ludwig Theodore Albert STOECKEL)

Wasn't getting far with it either till I found this

They were all on the GEORGE WASHINGTON

I presume they are the OTTO/OTTE family.

So we have the HAMSTERS and now possibly the KOTTE'S all aboard the same ship.

Now there is a Wilhelm OTTO in the BISA b 1832 Claustal - not spotting the parents. Problem is parents don't seem to have a second daughter of age (If Bette/Elizabeth = STOECKEL) and looking at their ages I wouldn't expect any older ones. Still all very interesting that we have all these people aboard that ship, and now it looks like the OTTO/E's were from the same town as the DEGENHARDT's.

Hi Kris, Yes it is possible that both girls were on the ship. Elizabeth may have been the older unnamed 18 year old and if the unnamed 13 year old was Lina, she would have been 18 in 1854 when she gave birth to Robert Degenhardt.  Louis may have had a relationship with the Hamster girl first and then Lina later.  But it is possible.

Sorry I forgot to add that the unnamed girls were Otto/Otte.

A copy of the death certificate from Victoria of Johann Carl Ludwig could very well be most helpfull.

As the informant knew his parents names they could have had knowledge of any  wives he had.

As Kris has stated Victorian certificates have a good deal of information on  them
