Ronald Spencer FUNNELL - early Newquay surfer
« on: Sunday 24 August 08 22:10 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for anything at all on Ronald Spencer Funnell born 1894 in Totnes, Devon. Commercial Traveler in 1916 when he joined the Territorial Forces. Lived in Newquay from 1944 to 1962, if not longer. Published a 36 page book "The Art of Surf-Riding on the Cornish Coast" in 1934, republished in 1953. Be grateful for anything concerning his life and achievements: newspaper articles, trade directory entries, surf club archives, relatives...
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Andy,

At the time of his daughters baptism in the 1940's (when she was apparently 19 years old) his address was 19 Tolcarne Road Newquay. He was described as a Manufacturers Agent...............Cheers Kris  :D

hepburn & krisesjoint, very grateful for all this information. Some interesting leads.

@krisesjoint - what makes you think Ronald S. and Phyllis had "3 children, all born in Croydon"?

If anyone has anything on his surfing life, that would be great.

Again, many thanks.

Hi Andy,

Three children are listed as born in Croydon. I presume all three are his as he has married by then and mother is Cocks and one is the one I found the baptism for nearly 20 years later in Newquay ;) I wont list them as they may be living. - will PM you
