1871 Census - BATEMAN
« on: Thursday 27 January 05 19:37 GMT (UK) »
My Bateman family are living at 19 Union Street (also called Hope Town) in 1861.  By 1881 the parents seem to have died and some of the family are still in Bethnal Green whilst others have moved to West Ham.

Can anyone find any of the following in 1871 please (ages stated are what they would be in 1871):
Joseph Bateman Bootmaker about 50
Mary Ann about 50
Rosetta about 21 (but in later censuses she knocks quite a few years off her age!)
Thomas about 18 (could be named Herbert- his first forename) a cabinet maker
Joseph about 15 a Toy maker.
John about 13

They could be with an older sister Clara Phillips aged about 25 and married to John.

There is an outside chance that Joseph Bateman's father is still alive.  He was living with the family in 1851 and 1861 and is another John Bateman. He would be about 87 though!

I would be grateful for any help on this.

The Bateman part is difficult as you don't give birthplaces or occupation of father as reference points. This is the only Bateman family in Bethnal Green - nearly matches up!

Emily Bateman 11  St George in the East, Middlesex, England Daughter  Bethnal Green  London
John Bateman 14  Spitalfields, Middlesex, England Son  Bethnal Green  London
Josias Bateman 40  Spitalfields, Middlesex, England Head  Bethnal Green  London
Martha Bateman 4  Shoreditch, Middlesex, England Daughter  Bethnal Green  London
Mary E Bateman 38  Middlesex, England Wife  Bethnal Green  London
Mary E Bateman 12  Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England Daughter  Bethnal Green  London

Living 23 Ada Street Bethnal Green
Father is shoe maker.
Ages depend on how accurate the 1861 census is.

Sorry, Tricia

Thank you both for your help.

Do you have a ref or address for the Hackney entry please?

The Bateman family you found is unfortunately not mine.  So that I can think about what to do next, can you tell me what areas the index you used covers?
