« on: Monday 25 August 08 10:16 BST (UK) »
HI there,
Does anyone have access to parish records in Abingdon?  I found a marriage for George Mills and Ann Harris on freebmd Sep Q 1840, and would like to know if his father was mentioned, and/or if someone can give me a date.

Kind regards
Jackie

Oh dear.

On their son's christening in 1856 in Reading, Berkshire, it shows parents as George and Ann.  Their son George was born in about 1849, according to 1881 census, and in Reading, Berkshire.
I have tried to look for a marriage between George and Ann, and the only one that i found was the one in Abingdon.

Can you perhaps help me out?

Regards
Jackie

This is all my information i have found:

Walter Mills was born 1879 in Dartford, Kent.  In 1881, he is shown to be living with his parents, (George and Margaret) and siblings at 17 York Street, Greenwich Kent in the census.  Together with the family, were two lodgers, a widow John Galler, aged 32, and his son, aged 9 years.  John Galler was a basket maker.

In 1891, the family were living at 56 Road Street, Greenwich, and the eldest daughter Elizabeth was shown to be a photographers assistant. By this stage, their father George had died in 1888 at the age of 41 years, leaving his wife to look after their children, with Eliza being 2 years old. Their daughter Margaret was not listed among the rest of the family, as she was at the S M D School for girls in Surrey.  In 1901 she was a domestic cook in Greenwich working for the Steel family. Margaret was listed as widowed and a “Laundress Wash”. She died in 1904 in Greenwich at the age of 53 years.

In 1901, there is an entry in Wandsworth Road, Lambeth, which shows a Walter Mills as a boarder aged 21 years, but being born in Chelsea.  I am not sure that this is the correct Walter, but it is the only one found.  With Walter being a purser, he could very well have been on board a ship at the time of the 1901 census, and therefore would not have been enumerated.

Between 1901 and 1906, Walter, being a purser on board ship, met Mary Jane Caroline O’Leary.  She was a governess to a wealthy family teaching and looking after their children.  (In 1901 she was a boarder, when next we find mention of her, she is getting married in 1906.)
On 9 May 1906, while living at 25 Leppoc Road, Clapham, Walter George and Mary Jane Caroline get married at the St Michaels at Bowes church in Middlesex to Mary.

When i see Walter in 1881, his father George is shown to be a Ship Fender Maker.  His father is shown as being born in 1849 in Reading, Berkshire.
The only George Mills on the IGI or anywhere else i searched was the one i found for his christening in 1856 with parents George and Ann.

Hope this helps:)

Regards
Jackie

This George is the one that married Hannah in Abingdon Jackie. :)

Maybe we have wrong family in one of the census. ???  How sure are you that this is your Walter?

Do you have his birth cert? How did you get Walter to start your census searches.?

We have to be sure of Walter first :) :) :)

Hi Sue,

Walter Mills born 1879 in Middlesex married 9 May 1906 to Mary Jane Caroline O'Leary.  I have the transcription of their marriage.
He was listed as residence 25 Leppoc Road, Clapham and she was listed as residence Lancaster Road, Bowes Park, Middlesex.  He was a purser.  HIs father is shown as George Mills, farrier.
When i put out a request for census for 1881 and 1891,
see my link:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,321910.0.html

I also got a census image of 1881 census, ref: RG 11 Piece 0719 Folio 106 Pg31.

Regards
Jackie
