hi ralphtheclaret,
I've just had a look at the results for the surname wilkes on the 1911 census
shane is right there are about 30 results for the name but I also noticed only about 9
seperate households.assuming by thomas wilkes age in the forties then his parents
not married in 1911 and his father would be the one you need to find. 2 of those nine households
have a lone female occupant. one other result is a barracks return so one male to check that leaves six more wilkes households which you can cut down further by religion if you have a fair idea what that would be. as the census is free you can afford to try more possibilities.
I'm tying myself in knots here  ;D ,hope you see what I'm getting at?
when you have only a couple of possible parents you could then use those names for a parent search on the latter day saints site.hope this helps.I know what its like to start out with little to go on.
                                                                                                       regards.Anne

oops, ignore the parent search,it only goes up to 1880
so no use but there is always the ifhf site for bmd.
but not if born in Dublin city centre.
