Hi Valerie

Have found out that all the children before she married David evans were to the same man - John Roberts though there are so many of them that I couldn't hazard a guess to which is him.

Don't know where the Charles comes in at all and none of the family know where it comes from either

Just an idea, Geoff, but sometimes people 'adopted' names as a result of a provision in a will, so it may be worth seeing if you can find one. :)

cheers

I have one family - Woolf - who suddenly became "Walker" (the wife's maiden name) in one census.  And then changed back, it was only in that one census record.  I have no idea if the enumerator just got his wires crossed or what.

Hi Paul & other interested Chatters, ;D

I have found what I am sure is the reason for the name change and where the name came from.

I'm told that in the late 1870's and '80's there was upheaval in the coal industry & a lot of the miners went on strike.
For their defiance they where black-banned from all coal mines in Co Durham by the owners of the mines.

My family of interest {HENRY} got around this by moving to Northumberland for a few years & then returned to Co Durham. This is when the name change took place to gain employment in the mines.
The name used {LAVERICK} turns out to be the former name of the wife and mother of my family. It came from from her first marriage, which I didn't know about until now.

Cheers
Geoff

Now that sounds very plausible, Geoff.  I'm sure that there are other Rootschatters who are researching Laverick in Durham - Bob's Surname Interest Table might have them.

cheers

Surname Interests Table (bottom of page and click on [Your Surname Interests]),

search for laverick:
