Gortadooey, Gortatleva,Gortcloonmore , lots of Gort?
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 18:14 BST (UK) »
I wondered when they registered weddings/baptisms at a parish church if someone came from one of the village like Gortadooey the old name  which people referred to as Gort a Dubha,Gortatleva old name Gort an tsleibhe,Gortcloonmore old name Gort Cluain Mor,could only part of the place name be recorded,if this was possible you could then be looking for leads in the town of Gort when really it maybe one of the villages/hamlets.What is the likely hood that this may have happened? Regards Nipy

Hi all the  three Gort's etc you have ,are all Townlands. So I would say marriage or Bap: would be done in the civil Parish. Which is Claregalway for the Three Townlands.

Thank you, Lep  (& Hi our paths have not crossed for sometime.)Yes I've quite a few parish records which as you say are under Claregalway, some have the townlands/address wrote out eg Gortadoe & others are just Gort all under Claregalway,I know Gort is a large town & not far from Claregalway,do you know Lep if Gort comes under the district of Claregalway ? It's just I'm dubious about all the records I've got that state Gort.Lep do you think I may be worrying over nothing ? Cheers Nipy
