Andersons Kirkpatrick Juxta
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 22:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone help with my Anderson ancestors.
the furthest I have got back is Thomas Anderson who died in Kirpatrick Juxta in 1838 aged 78. When their first child was born he was a miller at Archbank near Moffat.
I'm not sure how to find the correct birth. The closest in the county is 1763 in Eskdalemuir with a father James (his first son was called James so I guess this would be a good sign!). There are 2 others within +- 5yrs (Scotland's People).
However I thought maybe a miller might move there from some other mill further away.
Anyone got any thoughts?
cheers

Cannot help directly on Anderson, but can confirm millers move around. It depends on the nature of tenure. I had an ancestor who was miller at four mills in his lifetime.  Archbank is a farm within a kilometre north of Moffat east of Gallowhill, and by its situation a mill is quite likely.  For Kirkpatrick Juxta the main settlement is Beattock, a mile SSW of Moffat, but the parish boundary comes very close to Moffat. Although Eskdalemuir seems a long way from Moffat there were overhill routes between the two, so the interchangeability of family locations is quite feasible.

Thanks for that. Thomas was farming near Beattock when he died but I guess there's no way of knowing whether he hailed from Eskdalemuir or Kirkpatrick Juxta and perhaps his birth wasn't registered or the relevant page lost maybe?
Do you know if his father was likely to have been a miller? I could look up the possible birth in Eskdalemuir to see the father's occupation?
cheers

My Nana's Anderson, Johnstone & Little lines clog up that area :)

My grandmother's Anderson family are from Kirkpatrick Juxta but my grandfather's family are Littles, from Johnstone and before that Corrie Common, and yes, the Littles do take a bit of sorting....
Are your Andersons and Littles from the same areas as mine?
